Skeleton, Colouring And Texturing
Skeleton
Because my character is the basic shape of a humanoid I decided to use
the pre-made character from Maya and reposition the joints to fit my character.
Colouring And Texturing
For this I used the program Mudbox as I found the interface easier to use than Zbrush.
UV Mapping
In the end for a few of my mesh's I used the bonus tool, automatic mapping
from Autodesk and then tidied them up myself manually.
Coat
Fixing Problems
Coat Tails
After trying to UV map the coat, I found that the second layer or the tail of it wasn't going to work properly.
So I decided to separate the tail from the coat and have it as two objects.
This will make the coat easier to UV map.
Hair
Head
Hips
Hands
Shoes
Trousers
Building The Character
Corset
I haven't used the smooth tool for the corset because I think it shows that it is wired or boned like a real corset.
Trousers
I wanted the trousers to be figure hugging but to also have a flare to cover boots.
Coat
I liked the coat to have a shorter front and a fishtail back to show off the trousers and belt.
I also like the black gothic style to it, bringing in the waist.
During reading week I smoothed off the trousers to show the curve in the leg.
I also added the coat, I think that I may have to redo the creases that I have added
into the sleeves as they seem too prominent.
Adding More To The Coat
Hands
I found the hands very hard to make, but this was mainly down to my drawing, I should have added far more detail to it and possibly have drawn an above view of the hands.
I found practicing the hands we had been making in lectures helpful for making my own.
Head
Again if my pictures had more detail, making the head would be been easier.
When doing my drawing I thought if I made it simple it would be easier to model but I found that the more detail in the original image the more there is to go from when creating the model.
Inside The Head And The Mouth
As my character is going to have it's mouth closed I didn't
need to include a lot for the inside of the head.
Eyes
Face
Because of the angle of my head it has been quite difficult to mirror my head.
To solve this I duplicated the first half of the model and then mirrored new half.
Chest And Neck, Hair And Hips
Although the hips cannot be seen while the model is in the pose,
I thought it would be a good idea to add them in just incase when the model is moved
the skin can be seen between the corset and trousers.
Character Before Texturing
Designing The Character
Idea Sheet
The fashion of steampunk has always interested me, having the classic look with a futuristic twist.
I thought that my character could have a Lara Croft attitude in steampunk style clothing.
Model Sheet
I like that my character is quite simple to look at but has a lot of
separate parts to make the modelling more challenging.
If I could redo this model sheet I would draw the character more symmetrical,
so when it came to modelling I would only have to make half of it and then mirror it across.
Pose Ideas
I wanted my character to have a simple but strong looking pose to go with the Lara Croft/Steampunk theme.
